Inside a standard pin tumbler cylinder sits a row of small pin stacks. Each stack is split at a height that matches one cut on the key, and when every split lines up along the shear line the plug turns. Rekeying swaps those bottom pins for a set matched to a different key, which means the cylinder now accepts the new key and rejects every old one. The lock body, the handle, the strike and the door stay exactly as they are, and the whole operation takes a few minutes per cylinder.
When Lock Rekeying Is the Right Choice in Ruidoso Downs, NM
Rekeying suits any situation where the concern is who holds a key rather than how strong the lock is. Buying a property, ending a tenancy, parting with a cleaner or contractor, losing a keyring, or simply losing track of how many copies exist over the years all fit that description.
It is also the answer when several doors have accumulated different keys and you would rather carry one. Compatible cylinders can be pinned to a common key so the front, back and garage doors all match.
Rekeying Versus Replacement for Ruidoso Downs, NM Property Owners
Replacement makes sense when hardware is worn, corroded, of a low grade, or when you want a security level the current lock cannot deliver. In every other case rekeying achieves the same practical outcome for considerably less money.
A technician should tell you honestly which camp your locks fall into. If the cylinders are sound and reasonably graded, being sold a full set of replacements is being sold something you do not need.
Rekeying changes who can open the door. It does not make a weak lock strong, so if your cylinder is a basic builder grade unit, upgrading it at the same time is the better spend.
How Ruidoso Downs, NM Lock Rekeying Is Carried Out
The cylinder is removed, the plug is taken out with a follower to keep the top pins and springs in place, the bottom pins are exchanged for the new combination, and the plug is reassembled and tested. Most cylinders take a few minutes once the door is open.
Every door is then tested with the new key from both sides, and old keys are tested to confirm they no longer operate anything. That final check is the point of the whole exercise.
- ✓Existing cylinders re pinned to a new key
- ✓All previous keys rendered inoperative
- ✓Multiple doors keyed alike on request
- ✓Faster and cheaper than full replacement
- ✓Every door tested with old and new keys
Key Control After Rekeying in Ruidoso Downs, NM
A rekey is only as good as the discipline that follows it. Decide how many keys exist, write that number down, and know who holds each one. Most security drift happens because nobody tracked the copies.
For rentals and shared houses, rekeying between occupants should be routine rather than reactive. Building it into the turnover checklist costs little and removes the question entirely.
